Social Skills Assessments For Children

Not every child finds it easy to make friends, understand social cues, or join group activities. For some, social interaction feels like a puzzle with missing pieces—confusing, overwhelming, or emotionally draining. When these patterns persist, families are often left wondering whether it’s just a phase or something more.

At Global Psychoeducational Solutions (GPS), we offer comprehensive social skills assessments to help families understand the “why” behind social difficulties—and what to do next. Whether you’re in Chicago, Miami, or Columbus, our mission is the same: to offer answers grounded in evidence, empathy, and practical application.

Because no child should feel isolated, misunderstood, or unsupported in their efforts to connect.

What Is a Social Skills Assessment?

A social skills assessment evaluates how a child interprets, responds to, and navigates social demands across structured and unstructured settings—at home, in school, and in the community.

At GPS, we examine key social-emotional areas, including:

  • Understanding and using nonverbal cues (eye contact, tone, body language)
  • Starting, sustaining, and repairing conversations
  • Managing emotions and frustration during peer interactions
  • Navigating group dynamics, feedback, and social problem-solving
  • Demonstrating empathy, awareness, and perspective-taking
  • Adjusting behavior to fit various social environments

Some children are naturally more reserved. Others may present as intense, impulsive, or unaware of how their actions impact others. Our role is not to judge or label—but to clarify whether these patterns are developmentally typical or indicative of a social communication difference requiring support.

Why Families Seek Social Skills Evaluations

In socially complex environments like Chicago, Miami, and Columbus, children are expected to quickly interpret social rules, collaborate with peers, and adjust their behavior in real-time. When these skills don’t develop naturally, frustration and isolation can follow.

Parents often reach out when their child:

  • Struggles to initiate or maintain friendships
  • Is left out of group play or collaborative work
  • Avoids social interaction or isolates themselves
  • Talks excessively or misses subtle social cues
  • Becomes dysregulated during peer conflict
  • Is frequently corrected, misunderstood, or teased by peers
  • Has been flagged by teachers for “behavioral” or “emotional” concerns

These behaviors are often misread as defiance, rudeness, or anxiety—but they may be signs of a social learning difference that benefits from structured evaluation and support.
