Cognitive Testing For Children

As a parent, it’s natural to wonder how your child is developing—especially when questions arise around learning, attention, or problem-solving. A cognitive evaluation provides a clear, research-based understanding of how a child reasons, processes, and sustains effort across tasks.

At Global Psychoeducational Solutions (GPS), we conduct comprehensive cognitive assessments designed to identify learning strengths, pinpoint areas of need, and guide school-based planning. Whether you’re exploring concerns for the first time or seeking updated data to support academic placement, enrichment, or accommodations, our evaluations provide clarity that leads to next steps.

What is Cognitive & Intelligence Testing?

Cognitive testing evaluates a student’s underlying thinking and reasoning skills using standardized, evidence-based tools. These evaluations explore how students process information and solve problems across domains such as:

  • Verbal comprehension
  • Nonverbal reasoning and visual-spatial skills
  • Working memory and attention regulation
  • Processing speed and cognitive efficiency
  • Executive functioning and stamina across tasks

Our evaluations are not focused on assigning a label or a number. They are designed to understand how your child learns best—and how to support that learning in real-world contexts.

Note: Every assessment is customized to the student’s needs, and not all areas listed are included in every evaluation. Testing plans are determined collaboratively based on referral concerns, academic history, and developmental stage.

Why Consider a Cognitive Evaluation?

Parents often seek cognitive testing when a student:

  • Struggles with reading, math, or writing despite strong effort
  • Demonstrates inconsistent performance across academic subjects
  • Shows advanced vocabulary, reasoning, or problem-solving for their age
  • Works slowly or has difficulty completing tasks under time pressure
  • Becomes frustrated, anxious, or avoidant around schoolwork
  • Exhibits attention or memory challenges in structured learning environments
  • Is being considered for enrichment, gifted programming, or standardized testing accommodations
  • Needs updated documentation for academic planning or instructional decisions

We also integrate additional measures when needed to capture verbal fluency, mental flexibility, and real-time problem-solving under pressure.

Testing is typically completed across 2 to 6 hours, depending on the student’s age, stamina, and referral concerns. Sessions may be broken into shorter blocks to ensure accuracy and comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cognitive evaluations can begin as early as age 4. Earlier testing may be appropriate when there are concerns related to developmental milestones, early learning skills, or school readiness.

Signs can vary across ages, but common reasons families seek evaluation include:

  • Academic difficulties despite strong effort
  • Slower work pace or reduced stamina during extended tasks
  • Uneven skill development across subjects
  • Attention, executive functioning, or memory concerns
  • Advanced reasoning skills suggestive of giftedness
  • Challenges sustaining performance under timed or pressured conditions (critical for standardized testing readiness)

IQ testing is one component of a cognitive evaluation, but we assess much more than a single score. Our assessments explore how a student reasons, remembers, processes, and applies skills across different contexts.

Cognitive testing typically requires 2 to 6 hours of direct assessment, depending on the student’s age, stamina, and the range of skills being evaluated.

Younger students or students who benefit from additional breaks may complete testing across two sessions.

Your report will include standard scores, percentile ranks, and a detailed interpretation of how your child processes and performs across key domains. All findings are explained in language that is clinically accurate and parent-accessible.
